Zoox Recalls 258 Vehicles Over Autonomous Braking Issue

Zoox has voluntarily recalled 258 Toyota Highlanders equipped with its autonomous driving technology due to a braking issue causing unexpected hard braking.
The recall follows a May 2024 NHTSA investigation into two incidents where motorcyclists collided with Zoox vehicles operating in autonomous mode.
The braking issue was resolved with a software update by November 7, 2024, and the recall applies only to vehicles with software versions released before November 5, 2024.
Zoox is testing its custom-built robotaxis, which lack steering wheels and pedals, in San Francisco and Las Vegas, with plans to expand to Austin and Miami.
This recall reflects increased regulatory scrutiny of autonomous vehicle safety, following similar incidents involving Cruise and Waymo in recent years.
