Century-Overdue 'Famous Composers' Book Returned to St. Paul Library
Despite its delicate condition, the library plans to keep the artifact, marking the oldest return in the library's history.
- The book, titled 'Famous Composers', was found in a relative's possessions and returned to the St. Paul Public Library, where it had been checked out in 1919.
- St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter joked that there would be no fine for the overdue book.
- The library stopped charging late fees in 2019.
- John Larson, the St. Paul Public Library’s digital library coordinator, said the book is unlikely to go back into circulation due to its delicate condition, but the library will probably keep it as an artifact.
- In his 25 years working for the library, Larson said this is the oldest book he has ever seen returned.
